Description

This unusual vehicle is called the “Aviolancio” and is a two-door off-roader with a cloth hood. These models were used exclusively by the Italian military for airdrop via parachute, only this one here never actually flew. Our vehicle was lucky enough to be spared assignments and from 1959 onwards was used as an official training vehicle on a military base in Verona. Only in August of 1981, a seller was able to buy the vehicle along with several other machines discharged from military stock. The vehicle was then officially registered for private use on Italy’s streets and sold to its first private owner in 1982 to Mr Marcello Rosa, born in 1918. Mr Marcello Rosa was a former soldier from the region of Trento in southern Tyrol and had plans to completely restore the vehicle. Unfortunately, due to reasons of age he was not capable of achieving this endeavor, and the vehicle continued to stand, partly disassembled, in his workshop until mid-2010. In July of 2010 he sold the vehicle to Mr Armando Barnabò, who spent almost ten years refurbishing it with his best friend and then went on to sell it to us. The gentlemen kept photographic records and documented the entirety of the restoration process, and there is a folder with papers, CDs and manuals about the vehicle.

History

In the year 1951, the Italian Department of Defense released an official advertisement to the public in order to procure new 4x4 vehicles for the army. The old jeeps the allied forces had ceded to the Italians after the war were no longer reparable and had thusly become obsolete. Fiat was already building such a model under the lead of chief engineer Dante Giocosa. Fiat presented the Campagnola to the military, while Alfa Romeo offered the Alfa Romeo Ratta. In regards to technology Fiat was already far ahead of Alfa Romeo and had tested the vehicle’s prowess long before the government even released the advertisement. Alfa Romeo produced the 4x4 named Matta (translated ‘crazy’) on the basis of the Land Rover, and still Fiat won the call in spite of the much higher price. There was no competition in regards to usability and quality.
