A true muscle car!
This fully restored sports coupé from 1966 is new to our stock and was imported from Atlanta in 2009. During the frame-off rebuild the car was upgraded with wheel disc brakes, received an Edelbrock carburettor combined with an optimized outlet manifold (fan type exhaust pipe) plus an aluminum cooling unit with shiftable electric cooler and billet overflow. Additionally, a H&R sports chassis has been built in, which helps to assuage the typically imprecise quality of the drive experience of American classics.
The only reason for the existence of the Malibu SS model is the fact that in 1964, Pontiac released the “GTO” to the market, which was considered the most powerful vehicle at the time. Chevrolet promptly delivered a response with an all-round well-accomplished vehicle, whose coupé (and convertible) versions received the name Malibu. Thus, company partner Pontiac had hardly brought out the GTO before Chevy offered the Malibu SS (“Super Sport”) featuring a 220 HP strong 283ci V8 engine. But ostentatious hubcaps and a touch of matte black varnish do not yet a serious street racer make! Therefore, half a year later, a 327 Corvette V8 engine featuring 300 HP was built into the Malibu SS (starting 1965, a few rare specimens were outfitted with an even more hardcore version counting 365 HP) Thus was created the “Super Sport” SS-396 featuring a 6,5-l-V8 engine.
From summer 1966 onwards all Chevelles received a new bodywork in the new modern trapezium shape (the front leaning forward and the rear plate leaning slightly to the back) Furthermore, in accordance with changes in the law, the engine power was throttled down to 325 HP. There had simply been too many road accidents and illegal races with this powerhouse of a car. Our Chevelle is one of the last off the assembly line featuring the extremely rare manual gear transmission and the 365 PS engine that was included for only about a year. Following that year, one could only purchase the 365 HP engine version under the condition that it only be used on the racetrack. If you lacked this permission for the racetrack, GM only let you purchase the throttled 325 HP version.
